The Warrenton Middle School's counseling program strives to provide emotional support throughout the school day for every student. The Star Check-in program is offered to all students who want to work on personal goals... students check-in with the counselor after they eat their breakfast so as not to interfere with their academic day. The counselor works with a child's teacher for students who struggle behaviorally and need extra mentoring. In addition, students may receive free counseling during and/or after school for anxiety, depression, grief, and various other mental health issues. The counselor is available to all families as needed for emotional support and family counseling.
Homelessness Support
Children and families experiencing homelessness or foster care placement during the school year may access extra support through the counselor. Please feel free to call us and we will extend as much help as we can throughout the academic year.
As required by Federal Law (McKinney-Vento), the Warrenton-Hammond School District ensures that homeless children and youth are provided equal access to the same free, appropriate public education as provided to other children and youths.
Food Backpack Program
The Backpack Program is a supplemental food program offered to students who need extra food for weekends. This program is primarily provided through local community donations and supported by Warrenton Hammond Healthy Kids. During the week, all students receive free breakfast and are eligible for free or reduced lunches. On Fridays, students with parental permission are given backpacks with snacks and meal items for the children in the family to assist with meals during the weekend.
Clothing and Shoe Closet
Clothing and shoes are available throughout the year for students who may need new or gently used clothing items, coats/jackets and shoes. Also available for a limited number at parents' request, are new clothing. Shopping trips are offered 3 times a year for around 15 middle school students per trip. Around 60 elementary school aged students are offered new clothing during the fall and spring of each year. These clothing programs include new jackets, shirts, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes and are offered through the Assistance League of the Columbia Pacific.
Social Groups
Girls and Boys of all ages and grades are offered social groups during lunch with the counselor as room permits. These groups are designed to build friendships, encourage social skills, and have fun during a supervised lunch.
Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)
The Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program at Warrenton Middle School is offered to all eligible students. The counselor is also a licensed school psychologist and is the TAG Coordinator. Referrals are accepted from teachers, staff, parents or community members and students are tested with parental permission using cognitive measures. Students scoring 97th percentile or above and showing above average performance may participate in differentiated or accelerated coursework.
Mental Math Competition
The Mental Math competition is a wonderful experience for children grades 3 through 8 who excel at mathematics. Mini competitions are held at each grade level to see which students will represent Warrenton Middle School at the county competition.
County Spelling Bee
The county Spelling Bee is a great opportunity for students who excel at spelling. In the past, our librarian has held competitions for those students who will represent the school in the 3rd through 5th and 6th through 8th categories. The winners have the opportunity to compete with other stellar spellers in the county and then go to a state competition held during the summer.
Talent Search
Talent Search is a program offered through Clatsop Community College and offers our students extra mentoring beginning in 6th grade and continuing through high school. The goal for this program is to help students graduate and continue their education in college.
Career Field Trips
At various times over the year, field trips that expose our middle school students to various career options are available. These have included field trips to MERTS, Maritime Museum, and the Women's Trades Center.
